State roadways’ initiative to provide compassionate appointments to married daughters of deceased employees is a welcome move. This needs to be replicated by other state agencies as well since looking after the household and parents is the responsibility of children, irrespective of their gender or marital status. While roadways has taken the progressive route, it is imperative that all government departments/corporations follow suit to ensure that no family is deprived after the earning member’s demise. The state government should give nod to the proposal and ensure it is implemented in all departments.

Rajasthan Roadways management had applied for compassionate appointment for married daughters as dependents of more than 30 deceased employees. Since there was no provision for compassionate appointment to the married daughter in the Compassionate Appointment Regulations, in September last year, a proposal was submitted to the board of directors of the corporation to give compassionate appointment to married daughters. The proposal was passed and then sent to the transport department which asked for certain corrections to be made to it.
Talking about the status of the proposal, state transport and road safety minister Brijendra Ola told TOI, "Roadways is the first state service which has taken the initiative and proposed to give employment to the married daughters of the deceased employees. We are trying to clear the proposal at the earliest so that it can be implemented. Once cleared it will be sent to the government for approval."
Earlier this week, the Rajasthan High Court had ruled that a married daughter is entitled to a government job on compassionate grounds. The perception that a daughter is no longer a part of her father's household after marriage and becomes an exclusive part of her husband's household shows an outdated mindset, the court observed.

Sudheer Bhati, PRO, Rajasthan Roadways said, "We now have 32 such cases where married daughters of the deceased employees should be given compassionate appointments. This includes present cases and those upto 5 years old. The proposal has been sent to the transport department which will be forwarded to the state government. At present, the widow or son or unmarried daughter of the deceased employee are given compassionate appointment." Regularly the state roadways gives employment to dependents of deceased employees and earlier this month, 23 deceased dependents were given appointments by giving relaxations in cases beyond the period of more than five years.
The dependents of the deceased roadways workers were given compassionate appointments in the posts of operators (6), junior assistants (7), artisans (2), class IV posts (8). Roadways officials also informed 45 such appointments were made in December and 23 in January this year.
